INTRODUCTION OF PASSPORTS WITH DIGITAL FINGERPRINTING – INITIAL OVERVIEW

INTRODUCTION OF PASSPORTS WITH DIGITAL FINGERPRINTING – INITIAL OVERVIEW
The introduction of the new European passport, featuring digital fingerprinting, has required considerable effort on the part of this Consulate General to reorganize and adapt to the new procedures, with an inevitable increase in its workload. The results have been positive.  No noticeable inconveniences have been experienced by our clients, generally more numerous during the summer months.  In fact, passport applicants whose documentation was found to be complete have received their passport the very same day.  A short wait for the passport printing process, has saved our clients a second trip to this Office to pick up their passports.  This has been to the great satisfaction of both the clientele and the Consulate itself.

ELECTRONIC PASSPORT- PHASE II
04/03/2010
-
The second phase of the electronic passport project is being implemented.
In this phase, every passport-issuing office (both in Italy and abroad) is using a new type of biometric passport which includes, in addition to the picture, the holder’s fingerprints. These electronic passports will be valid for ten years.   As these new procedures come into effect, fellow citizens requesting a passport have to come necessarily in person to this Consulate General to provide their fingerprints. This service cannot be rendered by Honorary Vice Consulates or Consular Correspondents.
